To all learners that have participated in extra-mural activities this term and have done Ferndale High proud, thank you and well done! The Touch Rugby boys fought back well in their final match to draw 2-2 against Bracken High. They ended third in the league. The Grade 10, 11 and 12 Public Speaking learners participated in the Speech and Drama College competition. We have learnt a great deal and there is no shortage of talent amongst the speakers. Our inter-house competition in the second and third term will hone the skills of our public speakers even more to enable them to be even more competitive in 2010. Well done to all the following learners: Lerato, Michelle, George, Simon, Maletsatsi, Kenneth, Nkululeko, Masechaba, Yamkela, Ndhuvo, Saquina, Boipelo, Grace, Chelsea, Elongo, Siphokazi, Thando, Kagisho, Mosa, Zama, Aamena, Salomon, Karabo. Thank you to parents that attended the sessions and supported their children. FIRST TERM REPORTS Reports will be issued to parents on Monday 20 April from 16:00 to 19:00. This is an ideal opportunity for parents to meet with your child’s teachers, exchange contact details and express concerns. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE All Financial Assistance applications must now be with Mrs de Vos. The closing date for applications was 27 February 2009. SWOT ANALYSIS Thank you to all parents who have submitted the SWOT analysis forms. The results have been compiled and will be communicated to you shortly. SGB MEMBERS Interim Chairperson: Mrs S. Hendricks Interim Vice-Chairperson: Mrs. Ramlall Interim Treasurer: Mr. Sikitshana SIGNING DIARIES DAILY Teachers are experiencing the following common problems with learner discipline: · a large number of learners (approximately 100 learners) arrive late every morning and miss the first lesson every morning (usually Mathematics, English or Afrikaans). This impacts negatively on the learners’ results! · Homework is not done regularly · CASS assignments are not submitted on time · In some cases no effort is made with research tasks – proper research is not carried out! · Learners do not have the required textbooks · Learners continue to bunk lessons or arrive late for class after break or during change-overs To address these problems, we request ALL parents to sign their child’s Diary on a daily basis in the space provided and urge parents to use the Diary to communicate with teachers. Teachers will check parents’ comments on a continuous basis. In the second and third term learners will be given additional research projects to encourage independent research, creative thinking and as an enrichment activity. Emphasis will also be placed on reading and spelling ability across all learning areas. Parents, please encourage your child to read, read, read! HUMAN PROGRESS MANAGEMENT HPM has for past three years assisted Grade 9 and Grade 11 learners with aptitude testing and providing information on subject and career choices. The study courses offered by HPM are useful to learners, but parents are not forced to sign up for these courses. PAYMENT OF FEES Experience has taught us that parents become very reluctant to pay school fees especially if the month-end occurs in the school holidays. The school’s financial responsibility towards teachers, administrative and ground staff continues during the holiday. So too must the accounts of Telkom, SARS, Eskom, etc. be settled. Please pay school fees promptly at the end of March. The effective running of the school is dependent on your financial contributions! DONATIONS OF PAPER As stated earlier, a large number of learners do not have the necessary textbooks and consequently information must be copied and given to learners. The number of copies made in the first term was almost double the number made last year and the price of paper has increased by 20%. To address the current paper shortage, we request that all parents kindly donate a ream of paper (250/500 pages) to the school at the start of the second term. This will ensure that we have sufficient supplies to provide good quality examination papers to learners during the mid-year exams. ADVERTISEMENTSDoes your child need help?
